What is this about?
We are developing freely available systems to enable people with mobile phones to systematically observe, study, reflect on, and share their unique world. Currently, we have several active and pending campaigns that we would like to have you participate in:
- What's Invasive!
- a citizen science effort to document invasive plants in our National Parks.
- See a short slide show on how we integrate mobile phones and the web for citizen science, using What's Invasive!
- Our Android phone client application v1.6 is now avialable! Search on the Android Market for "invasive" or go to http://whatsinvasive.com on your mobile phone web browser (you will be re-directed to a download page).
- Boyle Heights: TRUCKSTOP
- a participatory sensing campaign geared towards collecting useful data about heavy duty trucks. With this Android application you can tag and complete a survey about trucks that you see idling or stopped in your neighborhood. The goal of this application is to document impacts from heavy duty trucks within the community of Boyle Heights. http://bhtruckstop.appspot.com
- WeTap
- a participatory sensing campaign geared towards identifying, describing and mapping public drinking fountains.
This service aims to provide access information to free water for those who simply want water to drink without the waste of disposable plastic bottles, or who want to refill their reusable canteens while out of the home. With this Android application you can contribute to a map of nearby drinking water sources and rate specific fountains to assist in helping this vital public infrastructure improve and reduce the use of environmental impact of plastic bottle disposal. http://we-tap.appspot.com
- Project BudBurst Mobile - Project BudBurst is a national field campaign which harnesses the power of citizen scientists to observe plant responses to climate and record valuable environmental conditions. A CENS Summer Intern Project started to expanded on Project BudBurst to create a framework to use cell phones to upload photos, observations, and comments. We are now working on a smartphone application to keep track of a user's observations and also include one-time observations, which is partly supported by the National Park Service.
- Biketastic
- Helping bikers find good routes and collect the data that improve them! We are currently running a pilot in which bikers can share their routes which are automatically annotated by noise level, roughness, variation in elevation, and duration of stops. http://biketastic.com
- What's Noisy
- Tell us what's noisy on your beat! Record and share geotagged audio clips describing what sounds fun or annoying to you. http://whatsnoisy.appspot.com/
- Sense The Beach
- We are interested in documenting the appearance of red tied, garbage/debris, sewer pipes/runoff and many other interesting things on the beaches of Los Angeles. We ask individuals with mobile phones to contribute by taking geo-tagged photos. http://www.sensethebeach.com
